UV22HR: Preserve Every Bit of Your Audio

High-resolution encoding for AAC, CD, DVD, MP3... any digital audio format

You have finished your mix and are now ready to deliver audio on CD, via your website or a music distribution service like iTunes. You don’t have to lose the best of high resolution 24-bit audio when you convert to 16-bit, 44.1 kHz for CD or to a compressed format for web delivery. Use Apogee's UV22HR dither technology to retain the superior quality of 24-bit audio within a 16-bit file. The resulting sound is amazing and ready to be burned to CD or compressed and encoded for digital download.

UV22HR Features and Benefits

  • Allows extended information - 24-bit and beyond to be encoded into a standard 16 or 20-bit medium such as CD, DVD-Video or downloadable formats such as MP3 and AAC
  • Retains all of the detail, tonal balance and sound stage in the original high resolution recording
  • No coloration of the original source
  • No pre-auditioning or settings necessary
  • Improves any digital playback system
  • No decoding required
  • Hear clean audio detail up to 30 dB into the noise floor

Apogee hardware products that include UV22HR are:
Symphony I/O, AD-16X, the Rosetta Series, and Ensemble.

UV22HR is now available in Logic Pro and Logic Express (updates 9.0.1)

Logic users can apply Apogee's UV22HR dither techology when bouncing audio from Logic Pro or Logic Express. UV22HR is also available in Steinberg's Cubase and Nuendo.

The History of UV22HR

First introduced to the recording community in 1993, the UV22 dither algorithm was first adopted by all of the major mastering studios and record labels and became the industry standard for encoding high resolution, 24-bit audio on to the standard compact disc. UV22 was surveyed to be employed on 8 out of 10 hit CD releases by artists as diverse as Bruce Springsteen, The London Philharmonic Orchestra and Donald Fagen, to name a few. Countless recordings have benefited from this process, allowing mastering studios and record companies to release product on the CD format retaining all of the sonic integrity of the original master mixes.

With the advent of new technologies and formats for digital audio including DVD-Video, and digital downloads including MP3 (MPEG-1, Layer 3) and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), UV22 was completely re-engineered to improve audio performance even further and allow extended resolution signals to be encoded on these new formats, all without increasing file size or bandwidth overhead. The result is UV22HR, for High Resolution audio encoding.

The UV22HR encoding algorithm has been available in select Apogee hardware and as an OEM product to select industry partners such as Sadie, Steinberg, Yamaha and most recently Apple, Inc.

What does UV22HR Do?

  • Encodes high resolution signals from 24-bit integer to 32-bit floating point to 16 and 20-bit media, without increasing the size of the resultant file. All of the detail and resolution in the original signal are retained without added coloration, distortion or non-linearities.
  • Encodes this extended resolution in an inaudible, algorithmically generated high frequency carrier around 22kHz, well above the limit of human hearing.
  • Retains the high resolution with a constant, ultra low noise floor free of any artifacts or signal modulation as a result of signal truncation or standard dither schemes. Clean audio detail up to 30 dB into the noise floor can be heard.
  • Eliminates low level non-linearities for higher quality playback on any CD or compressed audio format such as MP3 or AAC.
  • Eliminates complex settings... UV22HR is an intelligent algorithm that is optimized for the destination format so the correct settings are automatically employed without the need to pre-audition different settings or ‘curves’
  • Optimized for both linear PCM and audio employing compression algorithms such as MPEG-1, Layer 3 (MP3) and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC)
  • Offers extend resolution and intelligibility in low bitrate Codec applications, from 16 kbps upwards.
